Maasai Honey Claims First Prize in the "World Wildflower" Category of the Black Jar Honey Contest!

Every year the Center for Honeybee Research hosts one of the largest honey tasting contests in the world. It’s called the “Black Jar Honey Contest” because each honey jar is covered in black fabric. Even subconsciously, people can form opinions based on the appearance of a product, so by eliminating visual factors the contest ensures that entries are judged solely on taste! Multiple rounds of judging take place over several months where professional honey tasters rate the flavors of unique honeys from all over the world. According to the Center for Honeybee Research, “Honey is scored on moisture content, clarity, foam, and particles, with points being deducted for any defect”. Hundreds of entries are narrowed down to just 30 finalists that compete in the final tasting event at the Asheville Honey Fest.

This year, 2025, was our first year entering the contest. We know that our honey is delicious and unique (we may be a little biased 😉), but we didn’t know how it would rank against select honeys from all over the world. To our delight, not only was Maasai Honey a finalist in the contest…it won first prize in the “World Wildflower” category!

For years we have been celebrating Maasai Honey and the Maasai women beekeepers of Ololosokwan - a product with a story that supports a good cause. But it’s not just the story that makes it spectacular; the honey itself is one to be celebrated!
